NordVPN’s Answer to Russia’s Surveillance Law: Additional Security Measures

The Russian Government has just passed a new law that makes Internet and Telecom user data storage mandatory countrywide. All calls, texts, chats and web browsing activity will be monitored and stored by the country’s Internet and Telecom providers. Gathered Information can be accessed by authorities and several Government agencies without a warrant.

NordVPN will continue to provide its services in Russia and will be introducing additional security measures to ensure no Internet users are left behind, and Internet freedom can be provided to everyone.

NordVPN wants to ensure Internet users in Russia, as well as those accessing Russian Web content from abroad, that they can do so privately and securely.

New measures and precautions

We have taken a number of steps to ensure the Russian Internet users’ data is encrypted, not-logged and inaccessible even if our servers in Russia are seized for whatever reason.

• NordVPN servers do not store any logs ( not in Russia – not anywhere)
• New Double VPN servers will be introduced. They will ensure the traffic is encrypted twice and securely tunneled between the two servers (Detailed Service update to follow re: new Double VPN servers)
• We encourage our customers to use NordVPN apps, which use toughest security protocols by default (including OpenVPN or IKEv2):
  • (OpenVPN – cryptographic algorithm AES256 – using 2048-bit Diffie Hellmann encryption keys, and IKEv2/IPsec – AES-256-GCM  with SHA2-384 to ensure integrity, combined with PFS (Perfect Forward Secrecy) using 3072-bit Diffie Hellmann keys.)
  • Using NordVPN apps also ensures access to up-to-date updates and access to the latest servers
